The Use of Christian Hymns in the Music Therapy Setting 1st Edition - Ebook TR

In clinical practice, music therapists frequently encounter clients of a certain age and faith background who name Christian hymns as some of their most meaningful music. This resource examines hymns through the specific lens of music therapy practice and is designed for both students and seasoned professionals. Weaving together insight with the lived experiences of older Christian adults, the author offers essential context for understanding the deep emotional, spiritual, and familial connections clients often have with hymns. The foundational chapters equip therapists to make informed, culturally-responsive clinical decisions. The book then moves from theory to application. Music therapists will find “session-ready” lyrics and chords for 70 widely loved hymns, along with practical, music-based interventions for many selections. Each is thoughtfully aligned with Bruscia’s four music therapy methods, making this resource immediately useful for session implementation. Whether facilitating singing, improvisation, songwriting, or receptive experiences, clinicians will have adaptable tools at their fingertips. No prior familiarity with Christian hymns is required. Helpful bonus features include a detailed index by title, key, and theme, as well as a list of published hymnals organized by denomination. Both a practical toolkit and an educational guide, this book is an indispensable resource for music therapists who regularly incorporate hymns into their work, and an inviting starting point for those seeking to confidently integrate this enduring and powerful repertoire into clinical practice.
